There is no other town like Bolinas. There is no other community like West Marin. Perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, our community has pulse of quiet contentment backed by the ready adrenaline of natural upheaval.
Both the charm and the caution of being here is our curvy, one-hour distance from “anywhere.” Moreover, we know that it would be foolhardy to ignore the precarious geological position that our homes occupy, straddling an earthquake fault-line. Many properties are at sea level or very close. In the winter we have big rains and strong winds. And West Marin has known devastating fire. In a disaster, we are often isolated.
At the time when crisis strikes, we need to rely on our own resources. When time is of the essence, there is no one else close.
Fortunately, we have very competent health and emergency services in Bolinas and in our neighboring communities. Our volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and health providers are here for us when there is an auto accident, when a bicycler is down, when a son or daughter or grandchild breaks an arm or leg just playing around. We depend on them when someone has a heart attack and when anyone becomes just plain sick. But our facilities were not earthquake safe and did not meet federal standards. Now after years of hard work both new buildings are in use.
